Where it came from
Dinosaur Hunter was released in January 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the plane of Ixalan, a world defined by its lush, prehistoric landscapes and warring factions, including the Sun Empire’s dinosaur riders and the adventurous Brazen Coalition pirates. This card was designed as a common-rarity creature to support the black-aligned strategies of the set, specifically providing a low-cost utility unit that benefited from the tribal synergies prevalent in the expansion.
The artwork was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. The design depicts a scout navigating the dense, dangerous jungle terrain of Ixalan, emphasizing the hostile environment of the plane. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, grounded addition to the limited format, praised for its thematic cohesion with the set’s focus on exploration and creature-based combat.
