Where it came from
Direct Current originated as part of the Guilds of Ravnica expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in October 2018. It represents the Izzet League, a guild defined by their chaotic blend of blue and red mana, which manifests as spells that combine utility with direct damage. The card was designed to support the 'jump-start' mechanic, allowing players to discard a card to cast the spell from their graveyard, reflecting the guild's experimental and impulsive nature.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed extensively to the visual language of the game. His illustration captures the essence of Izzet pyromancy, emphasizing the volatile electrical energy that defines the guild's signature style. Within the broader context of The List, this card serves as a thematic inclusion, curated to remind players of the dynamic, spell-heavy gameplay that characterizes the Ravnica plane.
