Provenance

Where it came from

Battlefield Forge was originally released in the 2003 expansion set Mirrodin, representing the harsh, metal-dominated landscape of that plane. Its inclusion in The Brothers' War, a set released in 2022 to commemorate the foundational conflict of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, serves as a thematic bridge. The card depicts a location where the artifact-focused factions of Urza and Mishra would have manufactured their war machines, grounding the functional 'pain land' mechanic in the brutal historical narrative of the set.

The artwork for this version was illustrated by Titus Lunter, who adopted a grand, cinematic style to emphasize the scale of the war. Lunter sought to capture the atmosphere of industrial ruin and magical conflict, utilizing high-contrast lighting to highlight the scorched earth and mechanical debris. Upon its release in this set, the card was well-received by players for both its strategic utility in mana bases and its ability to evoke the specific aesthetic identity of the Brothers' War era.
