Drove of Elves

Drove of Elves was released in 2008 as part of the Shadowmoor expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Lorwyn, which had been transformed into the darker, twilight-heavy landscape of Shadowmoor, the card reflects the set's mechanical focus on hybrid mana costs and tribal synergies, specifically rewarding players for committing to the green color identity through its power and toughness tied to the number of forest cards on the battlefield.

The artwork was provided by Larry MacDougall, an illustrator known for his distinct, earthy, and sometimes whimsical fantasy style. MacDougall aimed to portray the elves of Shadowmoor as more menacing and inseparable from their environment than the more traditional elves of High Fantasy, blending organic textures with a sense of quiet intensity. Upon release, the card was generally viewed as a solid utility creature for tribal decks, praised for its efficient hexproof-like protection against non-green sources, which made it a resilient threat in both casual and limited formats.
