Where it came from
Divide by Zero was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set is themed around a magical university, and this card features illustration by Dominik Mayer, whose distinct, angular style emphasizes the chaotic, reality-bending nature of the spell as it disrupts the magical flow of an opponent's turn.
The card was designed to be a highly flexible utility piece, allowing players to bounce nonland permanents and interact with the game's unique 'Learn' mechanic, which permits players to fetch cards from outside the game. While it gained popularity for its strategic utility in competitive play, it eventually drew scrutiny for its efficiency, leading to its ban in several prominent constructed formats to maintain competitive balance.
