Where it came from
Culling Ritual was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set, specifically appearing within the Commander expansion component of the release. Designed as a powerful board-wipe variant for the Abzan color identity, it reflects the set’s academic focus on magical study and the cost of power, mechanics that align with the philosophy of Witherbloom College where the card’s thematic roots lie.
The card features illustration by Campbell White, who captured the visceral and macabre essence of the Witherbloom aesthetic. The artwork depicts a ritual sacrifice intended to fuel further magical growth, utilizing a high-contrast style that emphasizes the darker, necrotic themes of the set. Upon release, it was well-received by the Commander community for its efficient ability to clear low-cost permanents while providing a significant influx of mana, becoming a staple tool in resource-heavy deck strategies.
