Where it came from
Don Andres, the Renegade was introduced in the Commander expansion for The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, released in late 2023. This card serves as a high-profile inclusion within the Pirates-themed 'Ahoy Mateys' deck, reflecting the set's central focus on the subterranean, exploration-heavy lore of the Ixalan plane. It was designed to function as a powerful Grixis-colored commander that incentivizes aggressive play and the theft of opponent resources.
The character design leans into the swashbuckling aesthetic established by previous Ixalan sets, characterized by a mix of high-fantasy pirate motifs and the rugged, weathered look typical of the plane's inhabitants. The artwork, credited to illustrator Manuel Castañón, captures the character's renegade persona through dramatic lighting and bold, adventurous costuming. Upon its release, it was well-received by the Commander community for its unique ability to turn an opponent's own spells and permanents against them, cementing its role as a disruptive force in social play.
