Where it came from
Released in 1999 as part of the Urza's Destiny set, Donate was designed by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It emerged during the tail end of the Urza block, a period characterized by powerful, complex mechanics that heavily emphasized artifact synergies and unconventional playstyles. The card's ability to trade control of permanents was a novel design space at the time, reflecting the set's experimental approach to game mechanics.
The artwork was illustrated by Kev Walker, who utilized his signature dark, gritty style to depict the act of relinquishing a magical object. While the design intent focused on tactical manipulation, the card eventually gained notoriety in competitive formats for enabling 'combo' decks, most notably the 'Trix' archetype. This deck utilized Donate to give opponents harmful enchantments like Illusions of Grandeur, which resulted in a swift win for the caster, forever cementing the card's legacy in Magic's history.
