Where it came from
Donal, Herald of Wings was released in 2021 as part of the Crimson Vow Commander set for the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the set's thematic focus on the gothic horror tropes of Innistrad, specifically representing the ethereal and angelic forces that align with the plane's vampires during the wedding narrative arc of the expansion.
The card's illustration was created by artist Lius Lasahido, who captured the character in a regal, spectral aesthetic consistent with the visual language of the Spirit creature type in Magic. Upon its release, it was received as a niche but effective utility card for players utilizing blue-white commander decks, particularly those focused on duplicating powerful creature effects through its unique ability to create token copies.
