Provenance

Where it came from

Double Deal was released in 1998 as part of the Unglued set, Wizards of the Coast's first foray into a standalone silver-bordered expansion. Designed by Mark Rosewater and a small development team, the set was intended to step outside the constraints of traditional Magic: The Gathering rules to focus on humor and unconventional gameplay mechanics that would be impossible in a standard legal format.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, who leaned into the card's theme of duality and chaotic negotiation. Given that Unglued was experimental and purely for casual play, the design focused on creating memorable social moments during a game rather than competitive viability. It remains a hallmark of the set's subversive approach to card game design.
