Where it came from
Urza's Contact Lenses was released in 1998 as part of Unglued, the first 'un-set' produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Mark Rosewater, the set was intended as a humorous, silver-bordered departure from the game's serious competitive rules, explicitly meant to be played in casual environments rather than official tournaments.
The card features artwork by Susan Van Camp, who utilized a whimsical, cartoonish style consistent with the satirical tone of the set. The card's ability, which allows a player to physically peek at an opponent's hand if they can see their cards, was designed as a meta-joke on the limitations of player privacy, marking it as a quintessential example of the experimental and experimental design philosophy that characterized early expansion experiments.
