Where it came from
Double Major was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to represent the academic environment of Strixhaven University, a magical institution centered on five distinct colleges. Mechanically, it reflects the theme of duplicating spells, capturing the chaotic and scholarly essence of a wizard attempting to master multiple areas of study simultaneously within the game's complex ruleset.
The artwork, illustrated by Filip Burburan, features a visual narrative consistent with the set's high-fantasy, collegiate aesthetic. Burburan was tasked with depicting the magical process of replication, utilizing the vibrant, scholarly color palette associated with the Prismari college. Upon release, the card gained recognition among Commander format players for its unique utility, standing out as a thematic and functional piece of the set's broader exploration of spellcasting mechanics.
