Provenance

Where it came from

Double Take was released in 1998 as part of the Unglued expansion, the first set in Magic: The Gathering history dedicated entirely to satire and parodied game mechanics. Designed by the internal R&D team at Wizards of the Coast, the set was intended as a lighthearted departure from the game's increasingly serious lore, allowing designers to experiment with concepts that would normally break the rules of standard play.

The card features artwork by the pseudonymous Claymore J. Flapdoodle, a tongue-in-cheek credit used during the development of Unglued to emphasize the set's irreverent nature. The illustration style mimics the classic Magic aesthetic while intentionally subverting the player's expectations, reinforcing the card's function as a joke on the literal interpretation of game terminology. It remains a notable example of the early experimental design philosophy that helped define the identity of the game's silver-bordered products.
