Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1998 as part of the Unglued set, Double Play represents Wizards of the Coast's first foray into a standalone silver-bordered expansion. Designed to break the conventional rules of Magic: The Gathering, the set was intended as a humorous, self-aware parody of the game's mechanics. The card was created to explore the concept of interactive, dexterity-based gameplay, forcing players to involve their physical environment rather than relying solely on traditional turn-based play.

The artwork, credited to the pseudonym Claymore J. Flapdoodle, reflects the whimsical and chaotic spirit of the set. Like many contributions to Unglued, the aesthetic was intentionally unconventional, moving away from the high-fantasy tone that defined the standard game. It was received by the player base as a novelty experience, cherished for its experimental spirit and its willingness to sacrifice competitive balance in favor of lighthearted entertainment.
