Where it came from
Dowsing Dagger, which transforms into Lost Vale, was released as part of the Ixalan set for Magic: The Gathering in 2017. The card embodies the block's core themes of exploration and conquest, drawing inspiration from the Age of Discovery and the pulp adventure genre. Within the game's mechanics, it represents a high-risk, high-reward strategy that encourages players to engage in combat to unlock powerful resource-generating lands, reflecting the flavor of discovering buried treasure in a treacherous, uncharted territory.
The art for the card was created by Svetlin Velinov, a veteran illustrator for the franchise known for his clean, dynamic style. Velinov sought to emphasize the artifact's transformation, contrasting the ornate, lethal appearance of the dagger with the lush, serene landscape of the hidden valley it reveals. Upon its release, the card was lauded by players for its innovative double-faced design and its ability to act as a significant pivot point in commander and casual games, successfully blending narrative flavor with compelling tactical gameplay.
