Where it came from
Drover of the Mighty was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on a vibrant, meso-American inspired plane characterized by prehistoric themes, specifically pitting factions of pirates, conquistadors, merfolk, and dinosaurs against one another. The card was designed to support the set's green-aligned dinosaur tribal theme, providing both resource acceleration and a body that grows in utility as more powerful creatures enter the battlefield.
The artwork for this card was provided by Chris Rahn, a staple illustrator for the game known for his expressive, painterly style. Rahn’s depiction of the drover emphasizes the symbiotic relationship between the human handlers and the dinosaurs of Ixalan, capturing a sense of scale and untamed wilderness. Upon release, the card was well-received by players focusing on limited formats and casual tribal decks, as it offered a reliable way to manage the higher mana costs associated with large dinosaur creatures.
