Where it came from
Hijack was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card design fits within the set's thematic focus on swashbuckling adventure and the discovery of a lost, Mesoamerican-inspired continent. It functions as a red sorcery spell that allows a player to temporarily take control of an opponent's creature, reflecting the chaotic and opportunistic nature of the pirate factions that inhabit the Ixalan plane.
The card features illustration by Kev Walker, a long-time contributor to the game whose work is known for high-energy character depictions. In designing the card, the creative team sought to represent the classic 'threat' mechanic common in red magic, which often emphasizes impulsive action and temporary gains. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard functional reprint designed primarily to support limited format gameplay, where temporary theft effects are staple tools for aggressive strategies.
