Dragon Broodmother

Dragon Broodmother was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This card served as the set's Prerelease promo, a tradition where Wizards of the Coast distributes special foil versions of a card to players attending launch events. The set itself concluded the Alara block, a storyline focused on the confluence of five distinct shards of reality that had previously existed in isolation, requiring the design team to create complex, three-colored cards that represented the integration of these disparate mana identities.

The art was provided by Jim Nelson, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive, high-fantasy creature designs. For this piece, Nelson was tasked with depicting a formidable predator that embodied the predatory and fertile nature of the Jund shard, characterized by its reliance on red, green, and black mana. The card was well-received by the player base for its powerful ability to generate tokens, becoming a staple in Commander and casual play environments due to its scaling threat level during the upkeep phase.
