Where it came from
The Retaliator Griffin was released as part of the Alara Reborn expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2009. This card serves as a mechanical centerpiece for the Naya shard, embodying the set's focus on creatures with power of five or greater. It reflects the Alara block's emphasis on three-color themes and the integration of distinct mechanical identities from the planes of Bant, Esper, Grixis, Jund, and Naya.
The card’s artwork was provided by illustrator Dave Kendall, whose work is known for a dark, textured aesthetic that often contrasts with the typical high-fantasy tone of the game. By depicting the Griffin in a state of reactive aggression, Kendall visually reinforced the card's ability, which allows it to grow larger whenever an opponent deals damage to its controller. Upon release, the card was viewed by players primarily as a niche inclusion for aggressive green-white-red decks, celebrated more for its specific interaction in limited formats than for widespread competitive dominance.
