Where it came from
Dragonback Lancer was introduced in the Tarkir: Dragonstorm expansion, a set centered on the plane of Tarkir's fractured timeline where dragons returned to dominance. The card reflects the set's thematic focus on the synergy between warriors and the draconic overlords who reshaped the landscape. Its design was intended to provide a mid-game presence that benefits from the block's specific mechanical focus on dragon-related tribal triggers and board presence.
The artwork was commissioned to emphasize the brutal aesthetic of the dragon-worshipping clans, depicting the lancer as a rugged infantry unit tethered to the draconic power of the plane. The piece was well-received by players looking for reliable common-rarity utility within the Limited format, as it fits seamlessly into the aggressive strategies favored by the set's red-aligned factions.
