Where it came from
Dragonscale General was released in 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged set, the second expansion in the Khans of Tarkir block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to highlight the Abzan Houses, a faction characterized by their endurance and the use of dragon bone in their architecture and weaponry, reflecting a timeline where the nomadic clans of Tarkir were still locked in a constant struggle against the encroaching dragon broods.
The artwork was illustrated by Lucas Graciano, who utilized a bold, textured style to emphasize the character's heavy, scale-adorned armor and commanding presence on the battlefield. Within the game's mechanics, the card was intended to reward players for investing in defensive strategies, specifically utilizing the bolster ability to strengthen creatures, which served as a mechanical representation of the Abzan's philosophy of survival through collective resilience.
