Where it came from
Crux of Fate was released in 2015 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Fate Reforged. The card depicts the pivotal moment in the game's lore when the planeswalker Sarkhan Vol travels back in time to change the destiny of the dragon Ugin, setting the timeline for the block's narrative. It was designed as a powerful board wipe specifically balanced for the 'Dragons of Tarkir' themes inherent to that era of the game.
The card's striking illustration was created by artist Michael Komarck. His aesthetic direction focused on the grand, mythic scale of the Tarkir dragons, utilizing deep shadows and dramatic lighting to emphasize the destructive nature of the spell. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for both its thematic resonance within the set's story arc and its utility in various formats, particularly those featuring dragon-centric decks.
