Dragonstorm was originally released as a rare sorcery in the Scourge expansion in 2003, but this specific version hails from the 2006 Time Spiral Timeshifted set. This set was designed as a nostalgic tribute to Magic: The Gathering's history, featuring 121 cards from older sets reprinted with their original art and the classic 1993-2003 card frame, making them stand out from the then-current modern card border. The card was illustrated by Dave Dorman, whose dark, dramatic style was highly popular in the early 2000s for capturing the epic scale of high fantasy creatures.

The design of Dragonstorm centers on the 'storm' mechanic, which creates copies of the spell for every spell cast previously in the same turn.
