Mindless Automaton

Mindless Automaton was originally released in the 1997 Exodus expansion as a functional utility creature capable of converting cards into card advantage. Its design reflects the mechanical themes of the Rath block, where artifacts often prioritized sacrifice-based resource management, cementing its role as a flexible, colorless tool for players seeking to refine their hand quality at the cost of board presence.

The 2006 Timeshifted version featured in Time Spiral serves as a nostalgic callback to the card's original utility. By utilizing the original art by Dan Frazier—a veteran illustrator known for his iconic contributions to Magic's early years—the reprint maintains the aesthetic consistency of the mid-nineties. The inclusion of the unique purple expansion symbol signaled its status as a direct homage to the game's past, and it was well-received by players who appreciated the preservation of classic card designs within a modern, complex draft environment.
