Provenance

Where it came from

Drain the Well was released in 2008 as part of Eventide, the final set in the Shadowmoor block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the concept of hybrid mana and the transition from a world of eternal twilight into a darker, more volatile environment. As a common-rarity sorcery, the card was intended to provide players with a straightforward functional countermeasure within the blue-black color identity, reflecting the set's focus on thematic resource manipulation and decay.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Warren Mahy, whose contributions to the set were noted for capturing the grim, ethereal aesthetic of the plane. Mahy employed a dark, muted color palette and organic, slightly distorted forms to emphasize the oppressive atmosphere of the environment. While the card serves a mechanical role in deck construction, its visual design remains a clear example of the cohesive, brooding artistic direction that defined the Shadowmoor and Eventide era of the game.
