Where it came from
Drain Power was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the inaugural printing of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the card was designed to function within the game's original blue color identity, focusing on mana manipulation. The set was created to launch a new genre of hobby gaming, combining elements of collectible trading cards with complex strategic tabletop play.
The artwork for Drain Power was illustrated by Amy Weber, one of the original artists commissioned for the Alpha set. Her illustration captures the high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of early nineties gaming, featuring a stylized depiction of energy siphoning. While the card became a subject of discussion due to its powerful gameplay implications regarding mana drain and control, it remains a foundational piece of the set's visual history, representing the distinct, hand-painted art style that defined the game's early identity.
