Provenance

Where it came from

Drain Power was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as part of the game's initial mechanical framework. It functions as a blue instant that forces an opponent to tap all their lands, effectively draining their available mana for the turn. The design aimed to provide a tactical disruption tool, reflecting the game's early emphasis on high-impact, swingy interactions.

The Fourth Edition printing, released in 1995, features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the game's most iconic early illustrators. This edition served as a core set intended to broaden the player base and standardize the game's rules. While the card's original aesthetic and utility made it a recognizable staple of the early era, Drain Power was eventually retired from core sets and banned or restricted in various formats as the developers moved away from such aggressive mana-denial mechanics.
