Where it came from
Dreamtide Whale was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed for a set that emphasizes high-complexity mechanics and nostalgia for modern formats, the card serves as a versatile creature that leverages the 'energy' counter mechanic, which was originally introduced in the Kaladesh block. The whale is intended to act as a potent tempo tool, allowing players to blink permanents while capitalizing on the resource management inherent in its design.
The card features illustration by artist Wisnu Tan, who rendered the creature with an ethereal, dreamlike aesthetic fitting its name. The design focuses on fluid, aquatic motion combined with mystical energy, aiming to evoke a sense of vast, subconscious power. Upon its release, the card was received with interest by competitive players who identified its potential to disrupt board states, securing its place as a notable utility creature within the broader strategic environment of the set.
