Dress Down

Dress Down was released in 2021 as part of Modern Horizons 2, a Magic: The Gathering set designed specifically to introduce powerful, complex, and nostalgia-driven cards directly into the Modern format. The set aimed to provide tools for established archetypes while introducing unique mechanical interactions that challenge standard game state rules. By stripping all creatures of their abilities upon entering the battlefield and while on the board, the card serves as a disruptive utility piece intended to punish decks reliant on enter-the-battlefield triggers or static ability modifiers.

The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who utilized a surrealist aesthetic to capture the essence of 'dumbing down' the game's complexities. The artwork depicts a chaotic, high-fantasy scene being suddenly washed over by a muted, monochromatic veil, visually representing the card’s effect of neutralizing the intricate mechanics of rival creatures. Upon its release, it was recognized by the player community as a potent sideboard option, praised for its efficiency and its ability to act as a 'cantrip' that replaces itself in the player's hand while fundamentally altering the texture of the game.
