Archon of Cruelty

Archon of Cruelty was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed specifically for the Modern format, the set focused on bringing high-power cards into the game that bypassed the traditional Standard rotation. The card was conceived as a top-end finisher for mid-range and control archetypes, intended to reward players for navigating a complex board state by providing a massive swing in resources upon entering the battlefield.

The art was illustrated by Filip Burburan, who leaned into the dark, imposing aesthetic associated with the Archon creature type. By depicting the entity with a sense of looming, skeletal menace and dark plate armor, the visual design underscores the card’s brutal mechanical function. Upon release, it was widely praised by the competitive community for its versatility and impact, eventually becoming a staple card in multiple eternal formats due to its efficiency as both a removal tool and a source of card advantage.
