The Drone card was released as part of the Edge of Eternities set, a collection designed to introduce a distinct mechanical and aesthetic identity to the game's token pool. These common-rarity creature tokens were developed to represent basic, utilitarian combatants that could be summoned or generated by various spells and abilities within the expansion. The design philosophy emphasized a sense of mass-produced, industrial threat, intentionally deviating from more organic or magical creature types to fit the set's overarching theme of a vast, encroaching mechanical force.

The artwork was provided by Artur Nakhodkin, who sought to capture an imposing, impersonal aesthetic for the unit. Nakhodkin utilized sharp, cold lines and a muted color palette to highlight the artificial nature of the creature, aiming to evoke a feeling of inevitable, repetitive pressure during gameplay. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its clear visual language and thematic consistency, serving as an effective staple for gameplay mechanics that rely on rapid, low-cost creature generation.
