What it does

black mana: Regenerate this creature. (The next time this creature would be destroyed this turn, instead tap it, remove it from combat, and heal all damage on it.)

"The dead make good soldiers. They can't disobey orders, never surrender, and don't stop fighting when a random body part falls off."— Nevinyrral, *Necromancer's Handbook*

Provenance

Where it came from

Drudge Skeletons first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a staple black creature. Its mechanics, allowing the creature to regenerate by paying a single black mana, established it as a classic defensive tool meant to frustrate opponents and stall the board. The card was created during the nascent phase of the trading card game industry, where the focus was on high-fantasy tabletop gameplay and resource management.

The original illustration was crafted by artist Sandra Everingham. Her design for the skeleton focused on a gritty, macabre aesthetic that fit the dark aesthetic of the game's swamp-aligned creatures. Over the years, the card became a hallmark of the early game's design philosophy, appearing in the Duels of the Planeswalkers series as a nod to the game's long-standing heritage and fundamental defensive capabilities.
