What it does

black mana: Regenerate this creature. (The next time this creature would be destroyed this turn, instead tap it, remove it from combat, and heal all damage on it.)

"The dead make good soldiers. They can't disobey orders, never surrender, and don't stop fighting when a random body part falls off."— Nevinyrral, *Necromancer's Handbook*

Provenance

Where it came from

Drudge Skeletons was originally released in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to be a foundational creature for the black mana color identity. It occupies a storied place in gaming history as one of the quintessential early examples of a regenerating creature, forcing opponents to rethink their combat strategies due to the card's ability to survive destruction by tapping.

The illustration for the Tenth Edition version was created by Greg Staples, who brought a more modern, visceral aesthetic to the classic creature. By this printing, the artwork reflected the refined art direction of the mid-2000s, which favored more intricate, menacing character designs over the stark, experimental look of the game's earliest years, ultimately solidifying the creature's status as a staple of core set drafting.
