Where it came from
Due Respect was released in 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a strategic shift in the game's mechanics, designed to punish opponents for playing aggressively by forcing their incoming permanents to enter the battlefield tapped. It reflects the overarching narrative of the set, where the conquering Phyrexians systematically dismantle and demoralize their opposition through rigid, forced order.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Scott Chou, who utilized a stark, metallic aesthetic characteristic of the Phyrexian faction's visual identity. The design emphasizes the cold, calculated nature of the card's effect, focusing on the imagery of mechanical restraint. Upon its debut, the card was analyzed primarily for its utility in competitive formats, where its ability to stall fast-paced strategies provided a reliable, if situational, tool for white-aligned decks.
