Where it came from
Duel Tactics was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to reflect the scholarly and competitive atmosphere of the Strixhaven University, a magical institution centered on five distinct colleges. As an uncommon sorcery, it fits into the game's mechanics by allowing players to pit their creatures against one another, capturing the flavor of a classroom duel or magical sparring match.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Volkan Baga, whose work frequently appears throughout the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Baga’s aesthetic for this piece emphasizes the kinetic energy and academic rigor of the setting, utilizing a clean, illustrative style that highlights the interplay between spellcasting and martial prowess. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional tool for Limited formats, noted by players for its efficiency in facilitating board interactions.
