Where it came from
Dungrove Elder was originally introduced in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering set Magic 2012. Designed to emphasize the mechanical identity of green decks, which often focus on land ramp and creature size, the card features a power and toughness equal to the number of Forests you control. This design incentivizes a heavy commitment to basic land types and rewards players for building a resource-focused engine, making it a staple for mono-green decks that aim to overwhelm opponents with scaling threat levels.
The Foundations Commander printing, marked as card number 199, serves as a contemporary reprint intended to provide players with access to classic strategies within the modern Commander format. The illustration maintains the traditional aesthetic of the Elder—a massive, forest-bound construct that embodies the untamed growth of the wild. It reflects a design philosophy that values simplicity and impactful board presence, solidifying the creature's place as a reliable utility threat for those playing long-form, multi-player games.
