Where it came from
Dungrove Elder was originally released as a rare green creature in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering core set, Magic 2012. Designed with an ability that scales its power and toughness based on the number of Forests the player controls, it was intended to serve as a reliable finisher for mono-green aggressive and mid-range decks. The card was illustrated by Mike Bierek, who depicted the creature as a towering, ancient forest guardian, effectively capturing the essence of a traditional ramp-focused green strategy.
The inclusion of Dungrove Elder in 'The List' represents a recurring feature in modern Magic: The Gathering, where older, iconic, or mechanically relevant cards are reprinted with their original set symbols in specialized booster packs. This allows players to acquire historical cards that maintain their original visual identity while integrating them back into current trading card circulation. The card remains respected for its elegant simplicity and its role in defining early 2010s competitive green archetypes.
