Provenance

Where it came from

Earthquake was released as part of the 1998 Collectors' Edition set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was a non-tournament-legal reprint release designed to provide players with access to cards from the game's earliest sets, including Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited, which had become difficult to acquire by the late nineties. The black-bordered cards were sold in complete box sets, allowing collectors to experience the classic mechanical identity of the game's foundational era.

The art for Earthquake was originally illustrated by Dameon Willich for the 1993 Alpha release. Willich’s depiction focuses on the visceral power of the spell, capturing the chaotic energy of the earth splintering under a surge of red mana. As one of the original direct-damage sorceries, the card is characterized by its ability to hit every creature and player on the field, a design choice that established the thematic 'fire and fury' archetype for the red color identity in the game's early strategic development.
