Wild Growth

Wild Growth was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, serving as a foundational enchantment that allowed players to accelerate their mana production early in a game. The Collectors' Edition version, released in late 1993, was a non-tournament-legal boxed set designed to introduce the game to a wider audience and provide a static, high-quality collection of the game's earliest cards, featuring squared corners and gold-bordered backs to distinguish them from standard gameplay cards.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Mark Poole, whose distinct, painterly style helped define the visual identity of early Magic. Poole’s depiction of the card features a vibrant, mossy growth enveloping a tree, visually communicating the enchantment's function of drawing extra energy from the land. Within the context of the hobby, the Collectors' Edition is often appreciated for preserving the aesthetics of the game's formative period, with Poole's work remaining a quintessential example of the serene, fantasy-focused art direction that characterized the early nineties releases.
