Elemental

The Elemental token, numbered 8 in the Modern Horizons token set, was released in 2019 as part of Wizards of the Coast's direct-to-Modern card expansion. These tokens were designed to represent the various creatures created by cards within the set, specifically those featuring the 'Evoke' mechanic or other effects that generate 3/1 Elemental creature tokens. The inclusion of unique art for these tokens reflected the set's focus on nostalgia and mechanical depth, catering to players who enjoyed the high-power level of the Modern format.

The artwork for this particular token was created by artist Daarken, known for his visceral and atmospheric contributions to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. In designing this piece, the objective was to visualize a transient, volatile being composed of raw magical energy, fitting the theme of the Modern Horizons set. The reception among the player base was positive, as the high-quality, dedicated illustrations for tokens were seen as a welcome departure from the generic or repeated art often found in earlier iterations of the game.
