Where it came from
The Illusion token, numbered 5 in the Modern Horizons token set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2019 to support the mechanics introduced in the Modern Horizons expansion. This set was designed specifically for the Modern format, featuring cards that were never legal in standard play and drawing heavily from deep-cut lore and niche creature types. The token serves as a functional accompaniment for various spells and permanents within the set that create Illusion-type creature tokens, maintaining the thematic cohesion of the Modern Horizons drafting experience.
The illustration was created by artist Magali Villeneuve, a renowned contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Villeneuve opted for a fluid, ethereal aesthetic that captures the transient nature of an illusion, utilizing cool tones and translucent layers to give the creature an intangible presence. The design was well-received by the player base for its evocative art style, which elevated it above standard utility tokens, making it a desirable inclusion for players who prioritize thematic consistency and artistic quality in their card decks.
