Lore

Why it matters

As a member of the Modern Horizons Tokens set, this card serves as a functional accompaniment to gameplay rather than a centerpiece. While its common rarity makes it widely accessible, it remains a quintessential tool for players who need to represent summoned creatures on the table.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Bear token, identified as collector number 11 within the Modern Horizons Token set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. This set was uniquely designed for the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem to introduce cards directly into the Modern format, bypassing the standard Standard-legal rotation. Tokens are functional accessories produced alongside the main set to represent creatures summoned by specific spells or abilities.

The artwork for this token features the work of illustrator Svetlin Velinov, whose contributions to the game are extensive and recognizable. The design emphasizes a classic, grounded aesthetic, capturing the essence of a woodland creature to provide a clear visual shorthand for players during gameplay. Upon its release, the token was well-received by the player community for its clean design and utility in decks utilizing cards like Ayula, Queen Among Bears, which were central to the set's thematic tribal elements.
