The card itself represents the militant religious order of the Church of Avacyn, tasking players with defending the plane against the encroaching threats of vampires and werewolves.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Igor Kieryluk, whose work is known for high-fantasy intensity and dramatic lighting. Kieryluk conceptualized the Inquisitor as an imposing, armored figure meant to embody the fervor and discipline of the Church.
