Where it came from
Elite Instructor was released in 2020 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Theros Beyond Death, a set themed around the Greek mythology-inspired plane of Theros. The card reflects the set's mechanical focus on the enchantment and graveyard-related themes, depicting a scholarly figure from the academies of the city-state Meletis. It was designed to provide utility in limited formats through its ability to filter cards while interacting with the set's graveyard-driven synergies.
The illustration was crafted by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering. His design emphasizes the intellectual and mystical nature of the Meletian philosophers, utilizing the soft, ethereal lighting common to the set's depiction of the Therosian afterlife and its academic institutions. Upon release, the card was recognized by players as a solid role-player in blue-based control decks, noted for its reliability in maintaining card advantage during mid-game exchanges.
