Where it came from
Elite Instructor was introduced in the Jumpstart 2022 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, a set designed to prioritize ease of entry and replayability by allowing players to shuffle two thematic packs together to form a deck. As a card within the 'Wizardry' theme, it was crafted to support spell-based strategies by rewarding players for casting instant and sorcery spells through its card-drawing capabilities. This design philosophy aligns with the set's goal of providing cohesive, fun archetypes for both new and experienced players.
The card features artwork by illustrator Ilse Gort, who rendered the instructor with a scholarly yet dynamic aesthetic consistent with the high-fantasy style of the game. The visual direction focuses on the character's command over magical knowledge, mirroring the card's functional role as a tactical advantage in play. Upon release, the card was well-received by limited-format players for its utility in maintaining hand size, solidifying its place as a reliable engine card within its respective color identity.
