Provenance

Where it came from

Elven Rite was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second installment in the Rath Cycle, Stronghold focused on the dark, industrial environment of the plane of Rath and introduced mechanics that rewarded aggressive play and graveyard interaction. The set was designed to shift the game's balance after the high-power level of the preceding Tempest set, and Elven Rite served as an uncommon green sorcery intended to bolster board presence during a period where creature-based strategies were being refined.

The card’s illustration was provided by Jeff Miracola, a prolific artist who contributed extensively to the game during the mid-to-late 1990s. Miracola’s style during this era often leaned into traditional fantasy aesthetics, utilizing rich textures and earthy tones to depict woodland creatures and magical ceremonies. Elven Rite specifically depicts a group of elves gathered in a ritual, reflecting the expansion’s emphasis on tribal synergy and the lore of the elves struggling to maintain their traditions within the hostile, artificial plane of Rath.
