Where it came from
The Elven Riders card was released as part of the Rivals Quick Start Set, a starter product designed to introduce players to the mechanics and world-building of the short-lived Rivals trading card game. Developed during the height of the 1990s collectible card boom, this set was crafted to provide a balanced, ready-to-play experience for newcomers, featuring thematic archetypes like the woodland-dwelling elves that populated the game's expansive fantasy setting.
The design of the card reflects the aesthetic trends of fantasy illustration common to the era, prioritizing dynamic action and high-contrast color palettes to appeal to young enthusiasts of the genre. While the Rivals line struggled to gain a permanent foothold in a market dominated by larger competitors, it remains a point of interest for collectors focusing on niche card games from the late twentieth century, with the artwork serving as a capsule for the visual language of the period.
