Where it came from
Elven Warhounds appeared in the 1997 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Tempest. Designed as a green creature card, it reflected the game's shift toward more aggressive creature-based mechanics during the late 1990s. The set was thematic, focusing on the story of the Weatherlight crew and their adventures on the plane of Rath, and the design aimed to provide players with low-cost, effective tactical options for early-game board presence.
The card features artwork by Margaret Organ-Kean, who contributed several pieces to the Magic: The Gathering library during this era. Her illustration for the Warhounds depicts the creatures as sleek, woodland predators, aligning with the traditional green color identity of nature and beast mastery. While the card is not considered a powerhouse in competitive formats, it remains a nostalgic inclusion for collectors interested in the aesthetic and mechanical evolution of the Tempest block.
