Provenance

Where it came from

The Elven Warhounds were released as part of the Tempest expansion for Magic: The Gathering in October 1997. This set was designed by Mike Elliott and Richard Garfield, serving as the first installment in the Rath Cycle. The expansion introduced several iconic mechanics such as buyback, shadow, and slivers, aiming to increase the strategic complexity and combat interactivity of the game during a period of rapid growth for the franchise.

The artwork was provided by Kev Walker, a prominent illustrator known for his gritty, detailed aesthetic that defined much of the visual identity of Magic in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Walker's depiction of the hounds captures the ferocious, visceral nature of the creatures within the lore of the Rath plane. The card received modest attention in competitive circles, reflecting the aggressive, creature-focused design philosophy that characterized the Tempest set.
