Where it came from
Emrakul's Evangel was released as part of the promotional suite for the 2016 Magic: The Gathering expansion Eldritch Moon. The card was distributed as a participation reward for Prerelease events, featuring unique alternate art that distinguishes it from the standard version found in booster packs. This set focused on the corrupting influence of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul, tasking players with navigating themes of transformation and cosmic horror within the game's setting of Innistrad.
The alternate artwork for this promotional release was created by Johannes Voss, a prominent illustrator within the Magic: The Gathering community. Voss sought to capture the unsettling nature of the creature’s ritualistic effect, which forces a mass transformation of human followers into Eldrazi horrors. The design emphasizes the eerie, ethereal aesthetic central to the Eldritch Moon narrative, and the card was generally well-received by players for its atmospheric visual storytelling and utility in tribal-themed decks.
