Where it came from
The Zombie token from the Eldritch Moon set, released in 2016, was produced by Wizards of the Coast as a promotional card for use within the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These tokens are mechanically essential for gameplay, representing summoned creatures that lack the individual name or complexity of traditional deck cards. In the context of the Eldritch Moon expansion, the art and design were developed to align with the set's gothic horror theme, which focused on the corruption of the plane of Innistrad by the Eldrazi titan Emrakul.
The illustration for this specific token reflects the grotesque, eldritch aesthetic central to the set's narrative. Artists tasked with these pieces were instructed to evoke the unsettling, mutated appearance of the set's inhabitants, moving away from classic necromantic tropes toward more alien, body-horror designs. While these tokens are considered functional accessories rather than chase cards, they are appreciated by players for their role in reinforcing the cohesive, dark visual identity of the Eldritch Moon block.
